The Next Chapter in the 'Thickness of Calligraphy' Series

In June 2023, the Virtual Museum of Virtual Art (VMoVA) launched its inaugural formal exhibition, Thickness of Calligraphy—a breathtaking, meditative art experience designed as a serene gallery space that reimagined traditional Chinese calligraphy as a three-dimensional art form. This inaugural showcase chronicled artist and calligrapher, Boyan’s, unique research journey, including hundreds of his 3D calligraphy works.

Thickness of Calligraphy – Continuation builds upon the foundation of the original exhibition, reflecting both his ongoing dedication to the medium and his bold exploration of new artistic directions, curated and brought to life by VR artist, Jessien Huang.

By blending immersive technology with centuries of artistic heritage, the experience offers a deeply moving and fascinating window into Chinese culture and history. Elegant, surprising, and visually stunning, this remarkable virtual gallery rivals the atmosphere, and ambition of world-class physical institutions like London's Tate Modern.

In his talk at the Raindance Immersive Summit, Jessien Huang will share his continued exploration of the XR medium—from experimental architecture to the creation of a virtual museum that moves beyond the limitations of physical space. 

At the heart of this journey is the evolution of the Thickness of Calligraphy exhibition, featuring the beautiful artistry of Boyan. By transforming ancient calligraphic traditions into a dynamic, spatial experience, Jessien and Boyan invite you to engage with art in a social VR environment—bringing people together at the intersection of cultural heritage and innovation, and opening up new possibilities for how we experience art.
