Join us for a deep dive into the work of Japanese creator VoxelKei, an XR pioneer whose work spans from early 2000s real-time 3D CG to early development with the Oculus DK2 and Microsoft HoloLens. In this session, he will discuss his journey from creating photorealistic simulations of the Japanese archipelago in VRChat to early Meta Quest hand-tracking experiments, culminating in his latest VRChat world Spatialography, that pushes the boundaries of photogrammetry and Gaussian Splatting in Social VR.
Spatialography (Spatial + -graphy) posits that just as photography and film evolved into distinct artistic media, these reconstruction technologies are developing into a new language of spatial storytelling that goes far beyond simple recording.
Visionary XR creator and world-builder VoxelKei blends game development with artistic expression to transform abstract data into immersive, sensory landscapes. He first gained widespread acclaim for Japaneland, a monumental VRChat world that utilises authentic GIS topographic data to recreate the entire Japanese archipelago at a human scale. Advancing this foundation of digital preservation, his most recent project Spatialography pushes the boundaries of photogrammetry and Gaussian Splatting to capture real-world spaces.
Beyond spatial recreation, VoxelKei leverages a mastery of real-time audio-reactivity and custom shaders, decoding live audio and hardware MIDI data directly inside virtual environments. This technical innovation birthed the acclaimed audiovisual duo TONEVOK, a collaboration with musician R.Tone. Their live performances, including the Raindance Immersive-selected Sonic Sky Journey and Neutrino Lightfall, transport audiences into living worlds where every visual element, particle, and structural shift is dynamically triggered by the specific notes, velocity, and modulation in R.Tone’s live music.
