COMPASS: BUILDING AN OPEN-WORLD FLYING ADVENTURE IN VR
In this talk, Alexandre Pernot Lopes, co-founder and creative director at TREBUCHET, will share the creative and production journey behind Compass—the studio’s latest open-world flying adventure set among otherworldly skies. The session explores the challenges of developing an ambitious VR game within the realities of independent production, covering various related topics such as prototyping and iterative design, hardware constraints, virtual locomotion and comfort as well as open world level design.
Alexandre Pernot Lopes is co-founder of TREBUCHET, a Montréal-based studio founded in 2017 and internationally recognised for innovative games that explore the creative potential of virtual reality. A graduate in video game design from the Université de Montréal, Alexandre works across game direction, executive production, and marketing, helping shape the studio’s creative vision. He worked on TREBUCHET’s critically acclaimed debut indie game Prison Boss VR, directed the immersive PSVR title Winds & Leaves, and served as executive producer on Broken Edge and Prison Boss Prohibition. His work focuses on building engaging VR experiences that use the medium’s unique constraints and affordances as core design material.
